Ingredients:

For the Cake:

  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups of granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons of baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 cup of buttermilk
  • 1 cup of vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 1 cup of hot water or hot coffee

For the Fudge Frosting:

  • 1 cup of unsalted butter
  • 1/3 cup of milk
  • 1/3 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 cups of powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

For the Garnish:

  • Fresh strawberries
  • Chocolate sprinkles or chocolate shavings

Instructions:

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, mix the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until well combined. Carefully stir in the hot water or coffee until the batter is smooth.
  5. Bake the Cake: Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Make the Frosting: While the cake is baking, melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the milk and cocoa powder, then gradually mix in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until smooth.
  7. Assemble the Cake: Allow the cakes to cool completely, then frost with the chocolate fudge frosting. Layer the cakes if desired.
  8. Garnish: Decorate with fresh strawberries and chocolate sprinkles or shavings.
  9. Serve: Enjoy the cake fresh, and store any leftovers in an airtight container to maintain moisture.
